2018 Festival Highlights Film

Take a trip down memory lane at all the fun we had at last year's festival.

Shextreme proudly supports women behind the lens:

Director + Editor: Nic Kane / Producer: Peachy Queen / Music Composition: Emily Teague

Our empowering film festival was back for a fourth year in Bristol from 4 - 5th October 2018. With a spotlight on improving gender equality in extreme sports and adventure media, the big screen played host to some majorly inspiring and diverse stories, films, faces and locations.

The two-day event hosted a hand-picked programme of exclusive adventure film premieres; a film school, training the next generation of female adventure filmmakers; plus live art and adventure poetry performances. It was an action-packed celebration of women in extreme sports and adventure’s creative achievements.

There is no shortage of amazing women in adventure. However, there is a shortage of filmmakers sharing these inspiring stories on screen for all to see. Shextreme addresses this through the festival, now in its fourth year.

Exciting U.K. film premiered at the festival include a land shaped by women (2018): a surf and snowboard film following two Freeride World Champions, Aline Bock and Anne-Flore Marxer, as they explore Iceland’s incredible landscapes and the country’s rich history of promoting gender equality.

The festival began on Thursday 5th October with Shextreme Film School. Award-winning adventure filmmakers including Elise Wicker, Hannah Bailey and Paul Diffley provided expert advice on how to successfully film your next adventure. Then on Friday 6th October, at unique underground arts venue The Loco Klub, we sparked your sense of adventure with an inspiring programme of film screenings and an exciting live panel discussion. Guest speakers on the night were Hazel Findlay: the first British woman to free climb El Capitan in Yosemite, Dr. Easkey Britton: environmentalist and 5 times Irish National Champion pro surfer, Dr. Suzie Imber: a mountaineer and NASA-trained astronaut; Paul Diffley: an award-winning adventure filmmaker and Anoushe Husain: a prolific para climber and role model to anyone facing a self-limiting belief.
